Decorating your windows with curtains is a great way to improve the interior of your house. Window curtains can instantly make any house look pulled together and neat, and no matter what you decorating ability or budget, you can find curtains that match the interior of your home. Here are some great tips for using curtains to decorate your home:

Tip #1: Match your curtains to the floor.

You do not have to find a perfect match, but it is a good idea to stay in the same color tone when matching curtains and rugs. This is not absolutely necessary, however if you are not experienced at decorating, it is an easy way to make sure everything looks good together. You can also decide to use complimentary colors. If it helps, get a color wheel and find the color of your rug. Then, pick curtains that are the same color, one of the colors on either side, or the color directly across.

Tip #2: Choose sheer curtains to hang over blinds.

Even if you have blinds in you house, you should still consider choosing curtains. You do not have to use heavy drapes, but sheer color curtains will hide the blinds and give you a little privacy without blocking the sunlight. Blinds can be really unsightly, and often get dusty quickly, so by hanging some sheer curtains, you can really dress up any room.

Tip #3: Buy a valance.

A valance is a box-shaped structure, usually made from wood or hard plastic, which is screwed into the wall at the top of a window. It usually has no back, since it gets screwed in the wall, and has no bottom because the curtains hang out from the bottom. You can get valances pre-made, already painted, covered with fabric, or otherwise decorated. It is a quick and easy way to pull a room together, and if you are especially artistic, can make your own.

Tip #4: Buy the same curtains for every room.

You do not necessarily have to purchase the same color, but if you buy the same type of curtain for every room, it will make your entire house look more cohesive. A good way to do this is to purchase curtains from the same line. It saves you time, and if you purchase in bulk, it can save you money as well. By purchasing the same curtains for every room in your house, you are ensuring that your entire house matches and your interior will match as well. Also, you will not have to worry about it not looking right.

Tip #5: Go for quality items.

Although you may be on a budget, quality is important when it comes to curtains. A cheap curtain rod can easily bend in the middle, making your curtains sag. Also, poor quality material can fray and look worn quickly. Over time, it is always more cost-effective to spend more money at the start than to have to replace your window treatments every few months because they have become worn out.

Tip #6: Ask for help!

The best way to create a high-class décor is to ask for the opinions of people who already have a look you like. The next time you are visiting friends, pay attention to their curtains. What do you like? What don’t you like? Don’t be afraid to ask them where they’ve bought a specific item. That does not mean that you have to buy the same thing, but you can certainly have an idea about where to shop for something nice. In addition to this, when you go curtain shopping, take along a friend to help you make decisions. Having a second opinion is a great way to ensure you are purchasing the right pieces. By looking at other people’s styles, you can get a better sense of what works and this can help a great deal when you decide to shop for curtains. You can match colors better with a sense of what works.

Curtains are a great addition to your house and they provide many benefits. There are many methods of deciding the correct color combination, but the easiest thing to remember is to match the tone of your current carpet or walls. A complementary color will also work allowing the new style of your house to match well.

Most importantly, you do not have to make the decision by yourself. Take some friends along with you and you can get a second opinion of what works well with current style of your house. Even though they may have a different sense of style, it is always beneficial to see what others like. Next time you go shopping for curtains, use these tips and the process should be much easier and can be one step close to a more stylish interior.
